The collection is comprised of numerical files from the office of Kirk Dawson, JPL Associate Director. The files include memoranda, reports, correspondence, meeting minutes and presentation handouts collected by the Associate Director. The collection is arranged in a numerical filing sequence that was used by the office of origin. There are ten overall series: JPL, Caltech, NASA, Local Community, National/International, State of California, International Management Committee, Executive Council Files, Kirk Dawson Chron and Travel Files, and Miscellaneous. The filing sequence for the first six series is identical to that used for JPL 276, Associate Director, Institutional Collection, 1976-2000. Although the collection does include some documents generated while Duane Dipprey was Associate Director, the bulk of the collection span dates were during the time Dawson held the position, from 1993 to 2001. 1.0 Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Boxes 1-38; folders 4-402). Roughly half of the collection falls within this series. The series includes folders on various JPL offices and directorates, as well as multiple folders on the Facilities Space Council, Awards Files, Superfund Activities, Governing Program Management Council, Future Program Council, and Audit Reports. The materials have been arranged numerically. The one exception is the Audit Reports and Materials (1.4.7.1), which were placed at the end of the JPL materials by the office of origin. This original order has been maintained in the collection. 2.0 Caltech (Boxes 38-41; folders 403-448). This series of 45 folders documents interactions with Caltech. Included are multiple folders regarding the Caltech Administrative Committee on Benefits, and Caltech/JPL Financial Reports. 3.0 NASA (Boxes 41-49; folders 449-535). This series documents interactions with NASA Headquarters and Field Centers. Included are multiple folders documenting NASA Headquarters visits, and various NASA administrative conferences. 4.0 Local Community (Boxes 49-55; folders 536-573). This series of 37 folders documents interactions with local groups, primarily the United Way. 5.0 National/International (Box 55; folders 574-581). This series of eight folders documents interactions with various federal agencies, as well as single files on the JPL Office of International Affairs, the Aerospace Industry and on Federally Funded Research and Development Centers. 6.0 State of California (Boxes 55-56; folders 582-587). This series consists of six folders documents interactions with the California Engineering Foundation and the California Environmental Protection Agency. Note: the remaining series were not filed using the numerical filing system used previously. Institutional Management Committee (Boxes 56-58; folders 588-629). This series includes agendas, records and handouts of meetings of the Institutional Management Council (IMC) from March 2000 through April 2001. There are a number of IMC folders within the earlier JPL series. The original order of the series has been retained, rather than consolidating the two series together. Executive Council Files (Boxes 58-63; folders 630-676). This series documents the Executive Council Annual Retreat of 2000, with presentations, action items, and the final report, some of which are "JPL Discreet." Also included in the series is a sub-series of documents involving logistical issues of organizing the retreat, such as possible locations, and receipt material. The retreat folders were originally assigned the number "1.3.2" but were located separate from the remainder of the numbered material. This original order has been maintained and respected in the collection. Kirk Dawson Chron and Travel Files (Boxes 63-67; folders 677-755). This series is chronological files for Kirk Dawson for January through July 2001, and travel files for 1993 through 2001. Miscellaneous (Boxes 67-68; folders 756-762). This series includes documents involving the Ivan Rosenberg Leadership Workshop, and Chronological Files for Laurie J. Lincoln, Kirk Dawson's Administrative Assistant. JPL Discreet materials (Boxes 69-77): Of the above materials, 82 folders have documents stamped or marked "JPL Discreet." These have been moved to two boxes at the end of the collection. Their original positions have been marked with separation sheets. Whole files that are discreet are noted in the file folder list. There are several folders of "Quiet Hour" materials from various divisions. Quiet Hours were designated times of confidential conferences between management beginning at the divisional level and their superiors. Although these are not stamped "JPL Discreet," they have been treated as such, due to the confidentiality of the material. The material has been moved to nine boxes at the end of the collection. Their original positions within the collection have been marked with separation sheets. Whole files that are discreet are noted in the file folder list.
